Health Services

The school nurses in Conecuh County Schools support student success through interventions that improve student health and impact academic achievement.  They develop emergency care plans for students in life-threatening situations (e.g., bee stings, peanut allergies, and insulin reaction), and develop Individual Health Plans (IHPs) for medically fragile students.  The nurses also care for students who become ill or injured at school.

Vision and Hearing Screenings

As part of the school health program, vision and hearing are periodically surveyed. The vision and hearing testing are based on a process that is screening in nature, and not diagnostic. Screening is intended to identify, with reasonably high probability, subjects with a wide range of eye/ear problems who should seek the services of any eye/ear professional for examination, diagnosis and corrective recommendation. No screening process is a substitute for a full examination by a qualified eye/ear care professional.

Scoliosis Screening

The school nurse, health/physical education teacher, or public health nurse will screen to check for spinal deformities (scoliosis, kyphosis, lordosis, a side-to-side curve spine). The purpose is to recognize, at the earliest stages, any deviation from normal, so that the need for treatment can be determined. Spinal screening is now required annually by law for school children in the state of Alabama at grades 5 through 9.

Parents/Guardians Note: Please submit a letter to the school nurse if you do not want your child to participate in the Vision/Hearing Screenings or the Scoliosis Screening. Contact your child’s school nurse or Rita E. Young, Health Services Coordinator, if you have any questions.

Medication

Members of the school staff will not administer medicine or drugs, including non-prescription medications, to students except in the cases when it has been prescribed and requested in writing by the parent/guardian. Each student is required to bring a signed note from the physician.  All medication brought to the school by students must be stored with the school nurse during the school day.

NO STUDENT, AT ANY TIME, MAY HAVE ON HIS OR HER PERSON ANY FORM OF MEDICATION WHETHER LIQUID, PILL, OR CAPSULE FORM OR ANY OTHER FORM.
